Artist Statement
Alissa Rodea is a mixed media artist and is based in California. She has been a practicing artist for about 10 years and is heavily inspired by Surrealism. She uses materials such as photo paper, pigment powders, ink, chalk pastels, acrylic paint, and Diamond Dust (glitter glass). Alissa is inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo and Stev’nn Hall who have helped her gain confidence in her style of work. She enjoys mashing up photography and traditional art in order to make something new—a style that is not often seen, and a twist that Alissa enjoys by using photography, archival pigment prints, and traditional mediums such as acrylic paint, chalk pastels, and so on. Surrealism inspires her to make works that resemble a dream, which is how she channels her life and the things she is dealing with, into artworks. Currently, she is working on a series that will be called “Missing Pieces” that focuses on family loss. The primary subject of this series is her grandfather, and how his loss has left a spot open in her and her family’s life—a missing puzzle piece, in fact.
